Background, experience and image of interpreter

Untitled document

It is often thought that interpreters are simply translators. The difference between them is that translators work in front of their computers, translating written documents, i.e., they do not participate directly in a communicative situation, whilst interpreters are present where the communication is taking place and are directly involved as they are responsible for interpreting, i.e., orally translating one language into another.

Both professions are linked and, depending on the situation, and with the right training, may be carried out by the same person.

Each profession requires its own training. Most undergraduate degrees specialise in general or technical translation. Mastery of interpreting is usually acquired later by means of a module or master’s degree in conference interpreting. Some schools also offer a basic course for translators and interpreters, followed by one of two specialised cycles, translation or interpreting.

Interpreting requires a great deal of practice, experience and general knowledge of the topic to be discussed in order to facilitate rapid verbal conversion.

For this reason, qualified professionals, such as those from the medical, technical or economic fields, as well as other academic disciplines, find a way to communicate with each other and, through their mastery of two, three or four languages, subsequently take up interpreting.

Many people who have led a rather uncommon life have lived in multiple countries between nursery school and university and are thus fluent in several languages. Further education or a master’s degree based on this proficiency can pave the way for them to international activity.

Of course, the mastery of several languages does not in itself capacitate a person to render professional translation or interpretation services.

Interpreters are usually academics with a great deal of experience, able to bring high quality and standing to the service rendered.

Interpreters who work at congresses and conferences are highly qualified professionals with impeccable manners who know how to express themselves elegantly and feel at home in an international setting.

Generally speaking, they are reliable and discreet, as they are accustomed to working with politicians, authorities, universities, Nobel laureates, board members and representatives from international companies and delegations as linguistic intermediaries able to facilitate fluid communication.

Remember that the BK Interpreters professional you contract also represents your company.
